Matthew 5:36-37, "Nor shall you take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your statement be yes or no, anything beyond these is of evil."
Life Lessons Bible commentary, "Jesus discouraged oath-taking because this amounted to nothing more than human works. When we break an oath, it reflects badly on our godly character and on the LORD Jesus. As believers, our words should be just as trustworthy as any vow." So, be careful what you say. How many times have we seen the swearing upon the Bible in a court of law and the person be found to have committed perjury? How many times have countries made treaties (oaths) with one another and have broken it, bringing about war?
I'm so humbled that GOD's oath to us for our salvation in Jesus Christ paying the penalty for our sin, is not dependent upon our works, but His!
